Memorial Tournament: Rory McIlroy's final triple bogey ruins a good round

Posted : 02 June 2023
At the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, Rory McIlroy's triple bogey on the last hole marred an otherwise strong opening round.

The 34-year-old Northern Irishman had the lead going into the last hole but signed for an even-par 72 due to his dismal performance.

With a birdie on the 18th, American Davis Riley overtook Englishman Matt Wallace for the overall lead.

Wallace recorded a 68, while Riley fired a five-under-par 67.

Wallace got off to a good start in his quest for a second PGA Tour victory with six birdies and two bogeys, one of which came on the final hole.

Riley just missed one shot in his opening round and added six birdies to pull ahead of the pursuing group.

Prior to his triple bogey on the final hole, McIlroy had been playing well in his opening round, with just a bogey on the par-four 10th being the only error on his ledger.

Following opening rounds of three-under 69s, Danny Willett of England and Shane Lowry of Ireland are comfortably tied for third position.
