Mel Reid opens 15th AIG Women's Open Championship with first shot in rough

The 2023 AIG Women’s Open has commenced, and the initial holes have already presented glimpses of the captivating challenges that lie ahead at Walton Heath during the forthcoming four days.
Mel Reid, participating in her 15th Championship, exactly 16 years after securing the Smyth Salver, had the prestigious task of delivering the first shot. However, her initial shot led her into trouble as it veered into the heavy rough on the right side of the fairway.
A sideways chip-out was her only option, resulting in a bogey on the 1st hole. Meanwhile, Maria Fassi encountered a four-putt that led to a double bogey, and Alison Lee managed to salvage par despite her approach landing amidst the trees on the left side of the green.
Scoring remained challenging during the initial hour of play. Nevertheless, one participant who adeptly adapted to the conditions was Savannah De Bock. The Belgian amateur secured her place at Walton Heath through a dramatic seven-hole play-off that spanned two days, Monday and Tuesday.
De Bock continued her momentum, claiming the first birdie of the 2023 AIG Women’s Open on the 1st hole, joining a group that also included Cara Gainer and Yan Liu.
Former Champion Catriona Matthew, who secured the title in 2009, and English amateur Charlotte Heath had early tee times as well, both commencing with pars.
