Rory McIlroy, one of golf's biggest stars, is making the right decision by taking a break from the game following his dramatic collapse at the US Open, according to PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. McIlroy, who was on the verge of ending his ten-year wait for a fifth major title, faltered with three bogeys in his final four holes, leading to his announcement that he needed time to process the disappointment.
Speaking at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, ahead of the Travelers Championship, Monahan expressed his support for McIlroy's decision. He mentioned that he had been in contact with McIlroy since the US Open's tumultuous conclusion and fully respects his choice to step away. "Sometimes you just need to focus on what you need," Monahan said. "And that's what he's doing and that's exactly what he should be doing because that's what he thinks is the right path."
McIlroy had positioned himself well during the final round, starting three shots behind the 54-hole leader Bryson DeChambeau and gaining a two-shot lead with five holes to play. However, three bogeys, including missed putts from inside four feet, derailed his chances. After the tournament, McIlroy announced his decision to take a break and prepare for his title defense at the Scottish Open from July 11-14.
Despite McIlroy's absence, Monahan remains enthusiastic about the Travelers Championship, highlighting the strong field that includes Masters champion Scottie Scheffler. "We're at a Signature Event, you look at the quality of the field that we have this week, we're going to have a great Travelers Championship and looking forward to getting Rory back in Scotland," said Monahan.
