McIlroy Reflects on Near Miss as Schauffele Wins PGA Championship

Posted : 20 May 2024

In 2014, Rory McIlroy clinched the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in a dramatic finish. However, on Sunday in Louisville, Kentucky, it was Xander Schauffele who seized major championship glory with a decisive birdie putt at the final hole, while McIlroy finished tied for 12th at 12 under, nine strokes behind the winner.

McIlroy started the tournament strong with an impressive 66 on Thursday, keeping himself in contention. His final round on Sunday was also noteworthy, featuring three consecutive birdies and seven overall, resulting in a 67. Despite these efforts, McIlroy was too far behind the leading pace set by Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, leaving him to reflect on missed opportunities as his major championship drought extended towards a decade.

Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy pinpointed critical moments that cost him a higher finish. He cited a disappointing six-hole stretch on the back nine during his third round on Saturday, where he missed several makeable birdie putts and bogeyed twice. Additionally, a 71 on Friday further hindered his chances, contributing to the gap he could not overcome by the final round.

Despite the setback, McIlroy remained optimistic about his game. He highlighted his recent successes, including victories at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship. Looking forward, McIlroy planned to use his upcoming week off to reset and prepare for the next stretch of tournaments, aiming to finally break his major drought at the upcoming US Open at Pinehurst No. 2 and the Open Championship at Royal Troon.
