Rory McIlroy made a strong move towards securing his third consecutive Canadian Open title as he finished the third round tied for second place. His impressive six-under-par 66 in Toronto left him two shots behind CT Pan of Taiwan, who leads the tournament.
McIlroy is part of a group of six players at 12 under, including Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose from England. American golfers Mark Hubbard, Harry Higgs, and Andrew Novak are also at 12 under, with Aaron Rai from England one stroke behind.
McIlroy aims to become the first player to win three consecutive Canadian Opens and the first to achieve such a feat in any PGA Tour event since Steve Stricker's three-year win streak. McIlroy had a solid round with six birdies, taking advantage of improved conditions.
He noted that the back nine is crucial for scoring. McIlroy expressed his focus on his performance amidst the recent announcement of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour merging with LIV Golf, a venture backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. He mentioned feeling like a "sacrificial lamb" since the announcement but emphasized his ability to concentrate on his game.
Justin Rose, the 2013 US Open champion, had an impressive round with five consecutive birdies and finished with a birdie on the final hole. Tommy Fleetwood also had a strong round and would have equaled the course record if it weren't for Nick Taylor's outstanding earlier performance.
CT Pan, who is vying for his second tour title, finished the round with birdies on the last two holes. The halfway leader, Carl Yuan of China, struggled with a 74 and dropped to joint 16th place.
