Rory McIlroy and Tyrrell Hatton are just one stroke behind leader Antoine Rozner at the halfway point of the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. Rozner, from France, carded a bogey-free seven-under 65 to reach a total of nine under par, while McIlroy and Hatton both posted rounds of 69, following their opening 67s.
McIlroy's strong performance puts him in a favourable position to secure his third consecutive Race to Dubai title and a sixth overall. The only player who could challenge McIlroy for the trophy, South Africa's Thriston Lawrence, is currently tied for 34th at level par. Lawrence would need to win and hope McIlroy finishes outside the top 11 to claim the title.
McIlroy got off to a great start on Friday, making four birdies in his first seven holes, but struggled after the turn, bogeying two of the next three. "I was a little bit disappointed I couldn't kick on after such a great start," McIlroy admitted. Despite this, his primary focus remains on winning the tournament itself, rather than the Race to Dubai. "At this point I'm just trying to win the golf tournament," he said.
Hatton, who is tied with McIlroy, expressed frustration with his performance but acknowledged that being in contention on the leaderboard was a positive. The 33-year-old noted that scoring conditions were tougher than in previous years, which could have contributed to his position. Joaquin Niemann sits two strokes behind in fourth, while Shane Lowry and three others are at six under. Several players, including Paul Waring, need strong finishes to secure PGA Tour cards.
