Rory McIlroy finally completed golf’s elusive career Grand Slam with a dramatic and emotional victory at the Masters, clinching the title after a sudden-death playoff against Justin Rose. Despite letting the lead slip multiple times during a tense final round, McIlroy held his nerve when it mattered most, sinking a four-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to secure his long-awaited green jacket.
The win ended an 11-year drought since his last major triumph and cemented his place among legends like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Gary Player as one of the few players to win all four major championships.
McIlroy’s journey to Masters glory was anything but straightforward. He entered the final hole needing a par to win but pushed his approach into a bunker, then missed a five-foot putt for victory. That miss gave Rose, who had birdied the 18th in regulation, a chance in the playoff.
On their return to the 18th, McIlroy placed his approach just four feet from the pin, while Rose’s attempt landed 15 feet away. Rose missed his birdie chance, leaving McIlroy a second opportunity to win, which he calmly converted before collapsing to his knees in tears on the green, overwhelmed by emotion after more than a decade of close calls at Augusta.
The victory, McIlroy’s fifth major and third title of the year, came after a final-round 73 that brought him to 11-under for the tournament, level with Rose, who shot a stunning 66 with six birdies in his last eight holes. Their duel kept fans on edge as momentum swung repeatedly, with McIlroy at one point leading by four strokes at the turn after capitalizing on DeChambeau’s early mistakes.
The win earned him a record $4.2 million from the $21 million prize fund and completed a memorable comeback, fulfilling a dream that began with heartbreak in 2011 and finally culminated in triumph on the storied grounds of Augusta National.
