Max Greyserman took control of the PGA Wyndham Championship with a crucial eagle on the par-5 15th hole during the rain-impacted third round on Sunday. The 76th-ranked player in the world, who is a PGA Tour rookie, shot a four-under par 66, placing him at 15-under 195 for the tournament. Greyserman now holds a two-stroke lead over US amateur Luke Clanton, who carded a 62 to sit at 197.
Due to a tropical storm that dumped over 15 centimeters of rain on Sedgefield Country Club, play was disrupted, causing delays that forced the completion of the second round and the first half of the final round to be played on Sunday. The threesomes continued to play in their pairings to finish the final round before darkness set in.
In the final regular-season event before the PGA playoffs commence, Matt Kuchar, who led after 36 holes and has participated in every playoff since its inception in 2007, needed a win to extend his streak. Kuchar, currently tied for third at 198 with Ben Griffin, Davis Thompson, Cameron Young, Ryo Hisatsune, and Aaron Rai, struggled with his game after making a bogey at the 14th hole, slipping into a tie for the lead with Greyserman at 13-under.
Clanton, who posted a PGA career-best 62, demonstrated impressive form with two eagles on his front nine. He became the first amateur to achieve eagles on both a par-4 and a par-5 in the same round since Doug Ghim at the 2018 Masters. Clanton’s round included a fairway eagle from 129 yards at the par-4 13th and a six-foot eagle putt at the par-5 15th, following a bogey at the 14th.
