Matthieu Pavon makes history as first French golfer to win PGA Tour

Posted : 29 January 2024

Matthieu Pavon etches his name in history, securing his maiden victory on the PGA Tour at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego. The Frenchman's remarkable achievement makes him the first golfer from France to win on the PGA Tour in the modern era.

Pavon displayed resilience on Torrey Pines' South Course, recovering from an early bogey and tallying five birdies, including a crucial 8-foot putt at the 18th hole, finishing the week at 13-under 275.

In a thrilling contest, Pavon edged past Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard, who claimed the second spot with a commendable 12-under 276. Hojgaard, gracious in defeat, expressed determination to improve, acknowledging the challenges of the competition.

Pavon's victory holds particular significance for French golf, marking the first triumph by a Frenchman on the PGA Tour since World War II, a historic moment in the sport's modern era that commenced in 1968.

Pavon, who transitioned from an amateur player ranked 800th in the world, emphasized the enormity of the achievement, hoping it serves as inspiration. Reflecting on the surreal nature of the win, Pavon expressed gratitude to the PGA TOUR for providing European players with the opportunity to compete against the world's best.

The French golfer, participating in only his 11th PGA Tour event, described the victory as a dream come true, emphasizing the disbelief and joy surrounding this monumental accomplishment.

A tightly contested race for third place featured Nate Lashley, Jake Knapp, and Stephan Jaeger, all finishing two strokes behind the leader. Despite relinquishing his lead, Jaeger displayed satisfaction with his performance, acknowledging the challenges faced during the tournament.

Meanwhile, defending champion Max Homa concluded the event tied for 13th at 8-under 280, falling short in his bid to retain the title.
