Matt Wallace takes early lead with spectacular start at CJ Cup Byron Nelson

Posted : 03 May 2024

Matt Wallace of England catapulted into the lead during the first round of the PGA Tour CJ Cup Byron Nelson tournament, showcasing a remarkable display of skill by birdieing five of the first six holes. His bogey-free performance resulted in an impressive eight-under-par 63 at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.

Wallace's stellar play earned him a one-stroke lead over a trio of competitors—Sweden's Alex Noren, Canada's Taylor Pendrith, and American Chesson Hadley—while late starters were still navigating the course.

Reflecting on his electrifying start, Wallace expressed satisfaction with his performance. "It was great. Really solid day," he remarked. "Got off to a great start. Three birdies to start any tournament is nice. Just a really solid round of golf." The 34-year-old golfer, hailing from London, emphasized the importance of his strong beginning, hinting at a promising trajectory for the tournament.

For Wallace, this remarkable round marked a significant milestone, as it stood as his lowest PGA Tour score to date. Despite being a four-time European Tour champion, his only previous triumph on the PGA Tour came at last year's Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic.

Expressing confidence in his form, Wallace noted, "I knew something like this was coming. I know I'm building into a good stretch," hinting at his readiness to capitalize on his current momentum.

Wallace's round was defined by precision and consistency, evident in his ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities. From deftly navigating fairway bunkers to sinking crucial birdie putts, he showcased a well-rounded game.

Reflecting on his performance, Wallace highlighted the importance of maintaining focus and refining his tee shots in the upcoming days to sustain his momentum. As the tournament progresses, his poised approach and strategic mindset position him as a formidable contender for the title.
