Matt McCarty Triumphs at Inaugural Black Desert Championship in Utah

Posted : 14 October 2024

Matt McCarty made an impressive impact in his rookie season on the PGA Tour, clinching victory at the inaugural Black Desert Championship held in Ivins, Utah. After starting the final round with a narrow one-shot lead, McCarty showcased his skill at the short par-4 14th hole, where an outstanding tee shot set him up for an easy eagle putt, allowing him to extend his lead significantly.

Finishing the tournament with a 4-under-par 67, McCarty concluded the week at an impressive 23-under 261, three strokes ahead of Germany's Stephan Jaeger, who shot a 68. The 26-year-old left-handed golfer from Arizona had already secured his PGA Tour card earlier this year after winning three times on the Korn Ferry Tour, and this recent victory granted him a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour.

As the final round unfolded, Lucas Glover and Germany's Matti Schmid surged up the leaderboard with matching scores of 9-under 62. Glover's performance brought him to 19 under, applying pressure on McCarty, while he ultimately finished tied for third alongside Kevin Streelman, who shot a 69. Schmid wrapped up the event in fifth place at 18 under.

During the final round, McCarty began strong with two birdies on the front nine but faced a setback with a bogey on the 12th hole. However, his superb tee shot on the 310-yard 14th hole set the stage for an eagle that would help secure his lead. He finished the round with a sequence of birdie-bogey-birdie on the final holes before celebrating his victory with his caddie and family. The Black Desert Championship, part of the FedEx Cup Fall series, marked the PGA Tour's return to Utah for the first time since 1963.
