Matsuyama Sets Tournament Record with 62, Leading Morikawa by One at The Sentry

Posted : 05 January 2025

Hideki Matsuyama fired an impressive 11-under par 62 on Saturday at The Sentry tournament in Kapalua, Hawaii, setting a new 54-hole tournament record with a score of 27-under. His stellar performance, which included 11 birdies, allowed him to maintain a one-shot lead over Collin Morikawa, who also posted a 62, featuring nine birdies and an eagle.

Despite the absence of strong winds, which often affect play at the Plantation Course, five players recorded rounds of 10-under or better, showcasing a highly competitive atmosphere.

Matsuyama’s round started with a hot streak of four straight birdies from the third to the sixth hole. He made a 58-foot birdie putt at the ninth to match Morikawa's position at the halfway point.

After making birdies at the 10th and 12th, Matsuyama took the lead for good with a three-foot birdie at the 14th, which ignited a run of three consecutive birdies.

He maintained his momentum with a critical par on the 17th after his tee shot landed on the wrong side of the cart path, before closing with a birdie at the par-five 18th.

Morikawa, who was determined to keep the pressure on Matsuyama, hit 12 of 15 fairways and every green in regulation. His round started with an eight-foot birdie at the first and continued with additional birdies at the third, fourth, 11th, 12th, 15th, and 16th. He also sank a 26-foot eagle putt at the fifth, finishing with a birdie at 18.

Despite some minor errors, Morikawa was pleased with his performance, particularly the consistency of his iron play. The six-time PGA Tour winner was also pleased with the results of his off-season work, which had helped him find his rhythm early in the season.

As the tournament heads into the final round, Matsuyama and Morikawa are set for an exciting showdown. Belgian Thomas Detry is four shots behind Morikawa after a 65, while South Korea’s Im Sungjae posted an impressive 62 to sit solo fourth.

England's Harry Hall is also in the hunt with a score of 199. The tournament’s field was without world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who missed the event after injuring his hand in a Christmas Day cooking accident.
