Mark Williams Reaches Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters Final After 6-3 Win Over Si Jiahui

Posted : 07 September 2024

Mark Williams has advanced to the final of the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters after securing a 6-3 victory over Si Jiahui. The Welshman will now compete against Judd Trump in the final, which will be contested over 19 frames. This final represents a significant opportunity, with a £500,000 prize at stake, making it the richest match outside of the World Championship. For Williams, a win would mark the largest payday of his storied career.

Williams and Trump have a history of closely contested matches, including their notable encounters in recent years. At the 2022 World Championship, Williams mounted a dramatic comeback from a 9-3 deficit before narrowly losing 17-16. Their clash in the 2023 Masters final also saw Trump emerge victorious with a 10-8 win, overcoming an 8-7 deficit.

Si Jiahui's run to the semifinals, which included a notable victory over Ronnie O’Sullivan, was a significant achievement, although he fell short of claiming his first ranking title. Despite his defeat, Si’s performance in Riyadh earned him enough points to break into the world’s top 16, climbing to 13th place in the provisional rankings with £100,000 in prize money.

Williams, who is now 49, overcame a strong start from Si, who scored a break of 116 in the opening frame. Williams responded with breaks of 60, 97, and 77, establishing a 4-1 lead. Although Si fought back with a 136 break to make it 5-3, Williams secured victory with a final break of 80. Reflecting on his performance, Williams noted the challenges of aging but expressed confidence in his improved all-round game compared to his younger years.
