In a stunning upset, Mark Davis delivered a remarkable performance, ousting the reigning world champion, Luca Brecel, from the International Championship in Tianjin. This victory is undoubtedly one of the most significant wins in Davis' career, as he surged to a 4-0 lead, ultimately securing a 6-3 triumph. On the other hand, world No. 5 Mark Selby had a smoother path to progress, defeating Stuart Carrington with a 6-2 scoreline.
Mark Davis's triumph over Luca Brecel was nothing short of extraordinary. The world No. 64 stormed into a commanding 4-0 lead, setting a perfect foundation for his victory. Although Brecel managed to narrow the score to 4-3, Davis displayed resilience, winning the next two frames to seal an impressive win.
Davis kicked off the contest with a break of 51 and extended his lead with a brilliant clearance of 76. He continued his dominance by clinching the third frame, followed by a break of 64, putting him at 4-0. Brecel fought back to secure his first frame at 4-1 and further reduced the deficit with an impressive clearance of 87.
The Belgian player continued his strong performance with a break of 94, bringing the score to 4-3. However, in a tight eighth frame, Davis emerged victorious with a strategic safety battle. He finished the match in style, with a century break of 107, earning a place in the third round, where he awaits either Pang Junxu or Fan Zhengyi.
In contrast, Mark Selby had a more comfortable outing as he raced to a 4-0 lead against Stuart Carrington, with breaks of 66 and 88 in the first and fourth frames. Carrington mounted a comeback by securing the fifth frame with an impressive clearance of 70, but Selby extended his lead with a break of 110, reaching 5-1.
Carrington managed to reduce the deficit with a break of 82 but couldn't prevent Selby from sealing the victory in the eighth frame. Selby now looks forward to a third-round clash with Xiao Guodong.
Additionally, Zhang Anda triumphed over Mark Williams with a 6-3 score, winning four consecutive frames. Later on Monday, Judd Trump and Ronnie O'Sullivan are set to play in the tournament.
