Mark Allen achieved the fourth 147 break of his career during his third-round match against Ben Mertens at the Unibet British Open on Thursday. This remarkable break occurred in the second frame, giving Allen a 2-0 lead. The pivotal moment came after he cleared nine reds and blacks but found himself out of position on the tenth red. Demonstrating skill and composure, he executed a clever double shot into the center pocket, which allowed him to complete the maximum break. If his break remains unmatched throughout the tournament, he will receive the £5,000 high break prize in Cheltenham.
With this achievement, the Northern Irishman joins an elite group as the 16th player to record four or more 147 breaks in professional snooker. Notably, this is his second maximum break of 2024, having previously achieved one at the Masters in January. Furthermore, this marks the 205th 147 break in snooker history and the third of the current season.
Reflecting on his accomplishment, Allen expressed the unique thrill of making a 147 in front of a live audience, stating, "To make a 147 with a good crowd in that arena is very special." He revealed that at 72 points, he considered playing it safe but ultimately decided to take the risk, noting that the positioning of the balls made it worthwhile. While he acknowledged that winning a tournament holds greater importance, he emphasized the adrenaline rush associated with executing a maximum break, highlighting the excitement it brings throughout the process.
