Mark Allen Advances to Semi-Finals After Defeating Judd Trump in Quarter-Final Clash

Posted : 28 September 2024

Mark Allen made significant progress toward securing his first title of the season by winning his Unibet British Open quarter-final match against Judd Trump with a score of 5-3. The victory was bittersweet for Trump, who reached a personal milestone during the match, becoming only the third player in snooker history to achieve 1,000 career centuries. Despite this accomplishment, the world number one was left disappointed as his chances for a third title this season were dashed.

Allen, currently ranked third, advanced to the semi-finals where he will face Mark Selby. Having won three tournaments in each of the previous two seasons, the Northern Irishman has had a quieter start to this campaign, making this his first semi-final appearance. Allen is eager for the challenge against Selby in Cheltenham, where he will have the opportunity to chase his twelfth career ranking title.

The match began with a lengthy opening frame lasting 48 minutes, which Allen ultimately won after a tough safety battle. Trump responded with a century to level the match, but Allen regained control by securing a crucial third frame with a clearance of 33. He then extended his lead to 4-1 before Trump managed to win the sixth frame with a 92 break. Trump appeared to gain momentum, winning the seventh frame after Allen missed the final yellow, but Allen quickly rebounded, dominating the eighth frame with a break of 50.

Reflecting on the match, Allen expressed frustration at not closing it out earlier, noting he had several opportunities when leading 4-1 and 4-2. He acknowledged the significance of winning against Trump, especially given the latter's strong season. Additionally, he appreciated being part of the historic moment when Trump made his 1,000th century, even as he lamented the outcome.

In another noteworthy match, world number 99 Oliver Lines achieved a career milestone by defeating Jak Jones 5-4 to reach his first ranking event semi-final, setting up a meeting with John Higgins. Lines demonstrated resilience throughout the tournament, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure and affirming his determination to succeed.
