Mark Allen advanced to the semi-finals of the BetVictor Scottish Open after defeating Noppon Saengkham 5-2 in a commanding performance. Despite recent struggles with form, Allen displayed his best snooker against the talented Thai player, racking up breaks of 87, 120, and 127 to take control of the match. This victory marks Allen's 41st semi-final appearance in ranking events, and with this result, he is set to rise to at least fourth in the world rankings, with a potential move to number three if he makes the final.
The Northern Irishman is aiming to capture his second Scottish Open title, having previously won the Stephen Hendry Trophy in 2018 with a 9-7 victory over Shaun Murphy. Allen started the match slower than Saengkham, who claimed the opening frame with a break of 87. However, Allen quickly found his rhythm, winning four frames in a row, including a stunning 127 in frame five, before Saengkham managed to pull one back with a 136 break. Allen sealed the win in the seventh frame with a break of 105.
For Saengkham, the defeat meant another near miss for his first ranking title, after his runner-up finish in Edinburgh last year, where he lost to Gary Wilson in the final. Despite the loss, it has been a positive week for the Thai player, who showed resilience and skill throughout the tournament. Saengkham will now have to wait for his chance to claim that elusive maiden ranking crown.
In the other quarter-final, China’s Lei Peifan triumphed over Tom Ford in a tense 5-4 decider, reaching his first ranking event semi-final. Lei, who has already impressed by defeating Shaun Murphy and Stuart Bingham earlier in the tournament, showed great composure in the final frame, potting a brilliant shot on the brown and holding his nerve to clinch the match with a tough cut back blue.
