Marina Alex Leads FM Championship at TPC Boston with Bogey-Free Round

Marina Alex led the inaugural FM Championship at TPC Boston with a bogey-free 4-under 68, giving her a one-shot advantage after the first round. Her performance marked a significant improvement from her recent struggles in Scotland, where she battled challenging conditions at the Women's Scottish Open and the Women's British Open, including strong winds at St. Andrews that contributed to a disappointing 80 in the opening round there.

 

Among the contenders, former U.S. Women's Open champion Allisen Corpuz and LPGA two-time winner Lauren Coughlin both shot 69, placing them just behind Alex. Both players are preparing for the upcoming Solheim Cup and are using this tournament as their final competition before the event. Two U.S. team captain’s picks, Lexi Thompson and Sarah Schmelzel, along with Massachusetts native Megan Khang, finished with scores of 70.

 

The transition from Scotland’s challenging conditions to the firm greens and run-off areas of TPC Boston provided a welcome change for Alex, who had struggled to find her rhythm in recent weeks. Despite the added difficulty of playing in a twosome due to Jenny Shin's withdrawal, Alex managed to maintain her focus and deliver a solid performance, making birdies on two par-5 holes and two par-3s.

 

Coughlin, who had been at 4 under, experienced a setback with a bogey on the par-5 18th hole but remained upbeat. Her successful season, including two victories, has earned her a spot on the Solheim Cup team. Meanwhile, other Solheim Cup contenders such as Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho had less favorable starts, shooting 75s with Zhang managing only one birdie and Kupcho struggling with bogeys. None of the European players in the field managed to break par.
