The bottom half of the mixed doubles draw in the KFF Singapore Badminton 2024 second round saw a surprising turn of events on Wednesday as all four seeded pairs were eliminated.
The day began with the seventh seeds Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet suffering a swift 21-4, 21-15 defeat to Dejan Ferdinansyah and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja.
This was followed by a notable exit of two-time champions and sixth seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai, who lost 17-21, 21-11, 17-21 to Robin Tabeling and Selena Piek. This marked the second consecutive defeat for the Thai duo against the Dutch pair.
Selena Piek attributed their success to better speed and adaptability, having previously defeated the same opponents in the German Open quarterfinals in March. She noted that as the match progressed, they became less predictable and improved their control over pace and angles. For Tabeling and Piek, with their spot secured for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, gaining match practice and establishing a rhythm in the Singapore and Indonesia Opens was a key priority.
In other matches, second seeds Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping were defeated 13-21, 21-13, 18-21 by Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran, while third seeds Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino, last year’s runners-up, lost 21-13, 15-21, 17-21 to Yang Po-hsuan and Hu Ling Fang.
With these results, only three seeded pairs remain in the competition: first seeds Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong, fourth seeds Seo Seung Jae and Chae Yu Jung, and fifth seeds Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin. The eighth seeds Kim Won Ho and Jeong Na Eun had already exited the tournament.
