Olympic gold medallist Lydia Ko delivered an impressive performance at the LPGA BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea, carding a five-under-par 67 in the first round. This solid showing leaves the New Zealander just three shots off the lead, trailing behind Jenny Shin, Hannah Green, and Ashleigh Buhai. Ko's round featured five birdies without any bogeys, allowing her to maintain a competitive position at the Seowon Valley Country Club.
Reflecting on her start, Ko expressed satisfaction with her game, noting that she managed to avoid challenging situations throughout the round. She recently ended an eight-year major title drought at the Women's British Open and also claimed victory at the LPGA Queen City Championship in Los Angeles last month. Ko acknowledged that while she left several putts out there, her accuracy was commendable, hitting 16 or 17 greens, which set her up for numerous birdie opportunities.
Defending champion Minjee Lee matched Ko’s score with her own five-under round, while the leading trio each posted impressive rounds featuring eight birdies and no bogeys. Hannah Green, the world No. 8 from Australia, remarked on her straightforward approach to the course after a mixed performance the previous week in China. Meanwhile, South Korea's Ryu Hae-ran closely followed the leaders with a 65, while American Lilia Vu, ranked No. 2 globally, concluded the day one-under par, and two-time major winner Yuka Saso finished at three-under.
