Lydia Ko positioned herself for a potential second LPGA victory in 2024 with a stellar six-under 66 in the third round at the Blue Bay tournament in China.
Tied for the lead at 12-under par 204, Ko shares the top spot with American duo Bailey Tardy, who also carded a 66, and Sarah Schmelzel, posting a 69. Ko, the winner of the season-opening Tournament of Champions, expressed satisfaction with her performance, particularly highlighting an eagle on the par-five third hole.
Reflecting on her solid play, Ko emphasized her front-nine performance and the momentum-boosting chip-in eagle on the third. Expressing hopes for continued success, she aims to maintain a solid game and avoid challenging situations on the course.
Meanwhile, Schmelzel, ranked 95th globally, conveyed her enjoyment of being in contention, setting a personal goal for the year to be more consistently competitive. Having finished in the top eight at the HSBC World Championship in Singapore the previous week, Schmelzel looks forward to an exciting final round.
The tournament also saw the withdrawal of top-ranked Lilia Vu before the second round, creating an opportunity for Celine Boutier to potentially become the world No. 1 golfer. Boutier, currently ranked third, needs to finish solo third or better in the final round to achieve this milestone.
Despite a four-under 68 placing her in a tie for 22nd, Boutier faces a significant challenge, trailing eight shots behind the leaders. The French golfer, who secured her first major win at the Evian Championship last season, eyes a historic achievement as the first golfer from France, male or female, to reach the top ranking.
