Lydia Ko Claims Queen City Championship with Stunning Final Round

Lydia Ko showcased her exceptional form on Sunday, carding a stunning nine-under par 63 to claim the US LPGA Queen City Championship by five strokes, following her recent triumphs at the Olympics and the British Open. Starting the final round two shots behind Thailand's Atthaya "Jeeno" Thitikul, Ko quickly took control of the tournament, achieving an eagle on the 11th hole and finishing with a total score of 23-under par 265.

 

At TPC River's Bend near Cincinnati, Ohio, Ko's flawless round included seven birdies and no bogeys. While Jeeno began strong with a birdie and an eagle on the front nine, she struggled to maintain her momentum down the stretch, allowing Ko to pull ahead decisively. Ko expressed her amazement at her recent successes, including completing her Olympic medal collection and earning her place in the LPGA Hall of Fame.

 

Ko leveled the match with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 10th hole, then surged ahead with another 15-footer for eagle on the 11th. Although Jeeno managed to pull back a stroke with a birdie on the 12th, a pivotal two-shot swing occurred on the 13th, where Ko's excellent second shot set her up for a birdie, while Jeeno struggled with a bogey. Ko secured her lead further by making birdies on the 15th and the par-five 18th, sealing her victory.

 

Jeeno finished with a two-under par 70, which ultimately dashed her hopes of claiming her fourth LPGA title, as bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes hindered her performance. Her total of 18-under par 270 earned her a solo second place, ahead of South Korea's Ryu Hae-ran, who shot a five-under par 67 for a total of 271. With her third LPGA title of 2024, Ko reflected on her resurgent season and began to reconsider her career goals, expressing a desire to complete the career Grand Slam by winning the US Open and Women's PGA Championship.
