Luke Donald open to captaining Europe at 2025 Ryder Cup
Posted : 02 October 2023
Luke Donald is open to the possibility of captaining Europe at the 2025 Ryder Cup. Following Europe's victory in Rome, chants of "two more years" were heard, indicating support for Donald's potential return as captain.
Donald, who has a distinguished history in the Ryder Cup as both a player and captain, expressed his appreciation for the players' support but stated that he hadn't deeply considered the prospect of staying on as captain. He emphasized the need to savor the current victory and reflect on the decision in the future.
If Donald were to continue as captain in 2025, it would be a rare occurrence, as the last European captain to serve consecutive terms was Bernard Gallacher, who led the team from 1991 to 1995.
The 2025 Ryder Cup is scheduled to be held at Bethpage Black in New York, which Donald acknowledged as a challenging environment due to passionate American fans. However, he also recognized the potential accomplishment of winning in such a tough setting.
Europe's recent victory extends their unbeaten home record in the Ryder Cup to over 30 years and marks the fifth consecutive win by the home side in the tournament.
