Ludvig Åberg Reflects on College Days Ahead of Valero Texas Open

Posted : 04 April 2025

Ludvig Åberg, a rising Swedish star in golf, reflected on his college days at Texas Tech University ahead of this week's Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio. Though he hails from Eslow, Sweden, approximately 5,179 miles away, Åberg fondly recalled his time in Lubbock, Texas, where he spent four years playing for one of the top golf programs in the United States.

"It was a great experience to get my education as well," said the 25-year-old, who continues to speak highly of his alma mater. "I can't talk nicely enough about Lubbock and Texas Tech."

Currently ranked fifth in the Official World Golf Ranking, Åberg is aiming for his second PGA Tour victory of 2025 after claiming the Genesis Invitational in February. He began the season strong with a tie for fifth at The Sentry but has since faced mixed results, including a tie for 22nd at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

This week’s tournament in Texas marks his return to a familiar course, where he tied for 14th place last year. After missing the cut at The Players Championship last month, Åberg is eager to bounce back.

Åberg is no stranger to Texas, and he enjoys returning to Lubbock whenever possible. He mentioned attending a basketball game with friends last weekend and spoke about how his time in the U.S. offered him a unique cultural experience compared to his upbringing in Sweden.

“It was great to see a different side of the world that I hadn’t seen before,” he said, expressing his love for traveling and discovering new places. "Yeah, I’ll be back in Lubbock whenever I can next time."

Despite his experience on the Valero Texas Open course, Åberg knows that familiarity won’t guarantee success when the tournament begins. He recognizes that the course can be challenging, with fast greens and potential wind that can make conditions tough.

“Once you start to miss a little bit, it can be a little penalizing,” he said. However, he is optimistic and excited for the test ahead. "It will be fun," he added, knowing that the challenge remains the same for everyone when play officially starts on Thursday.
