Ludvig Åberg Leads Farmers Insurance Open

Posted : 23 January 2025

Ludvig Åberg of Sweden shot an impressive nine-under-par 63 to take the lead after the first round of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in California. The 25-year-old carded eight birdies and an eagle, with just one bogey, on the North Course, benefiting from the ideal weather conditions.

Åberg's round marked the lowest opening round of his career, and he expressed his satisfaction with his performance, saying, “Super happy with the way we kind of came out of the gates today and played some good golf.”

The round began with Åberg finding his rhythm early, starting on the back nine and securing three consecutive birdies. A birdie on his fifth hole followed by an eagle helped him reach six-under at the turn. He added four more birdies down the stretch, with a single bogey on his 11th hole completing his outstanding round. "Torrey Pines is a really, really cool place," Åberg added, clearly impressed by the course's challenging layout and stunning views.

Åberg’s stellar round put him two shots clear of Americans Danny Walker and Hayden Springer, both of whom finished tied for second with seven-under-par 65s. Walker's score came on the more difficult South Course, where he carded seven birdies in a bogey-free round. He noted that he focused on hitting the greens and rolling in putts to secure his score, adding, “I think I hit every green, which is rare, especially on a course that challenging.”

Several players are chasing the leaders, with four golfers—Lanto Griffin, Zac Blair, Zach Johnson, and South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter—at six under. Among those at five under are South Africa's Erik van Rooyen and France’s Antoine Rozner. Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, ranked No. 4 in the world, is tied for 18th with 10 other players at four under after the opening round.
