Lucas Glover continued his impressive form after switching to a long putter, taking a one-shot lead in the Barbasol Championship with a stellar 9-under 63 on Thursday. The 43-year-old golfer extended his streak of consecutive rounds in the 60s to nine.
After struggling with his putting for years, Glover made the switch to the broomstick putter two weeks ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, resulting in a tied fourth-place finish. He followed that up with a tied sixth-place finish at the John Deere Classic last week.
Fellow PGA Tour veterans Ryan Moore and Ryan Armour also had outstanding rounds, both shooting 64 at Keene Trace Club. Glover got off to a strong start on the front nine, carding six birdies for a 5-under 31. He then added an eagle on the par-4 12th hole, sinking his approach shot from 138 yards. Glover continued his momentum with consecutive birdies on the 15th and 16th holes.
Glover, a former U.S. Open champion in 2009, won his last PGA Tour title at the John Deere Classic two years ago. Armour, who teed off early in the morning, and Moore displayed excellent performances on a sunny and humid day.
Armour birdied holes 2-5 and finished with another run of four straight birdies, while Moore had a bogey-free round and birdied all four par-5s.
Several players shot 65, including Daniel Brown, Wesley Bryan, Cody Gribble, and Andrew Novak. Notably, there were four European tour players among the group just two shots off the lead.
Marcus Helligkilde from Denmark, Marcus Kinhult from Sweden, Angel Hildago Portillo from Spain, and American Johannes Veerman joined Americans Adam Long and Bo Van Pelt, as well as Swede Vincent Norrman, who regularly competes on the PGA Tour.
