Tomi Falase, of the Lagos State Squash Association (LSSA), stated that the third edition of the Prime Atlantic Squash Open would enhance the world rankings of participating players. Falase made these remarks in an interview in Lagos.
PSA, the world governing body of squash responsible for ranking players based on their performance at PSA-approved tournaments, oversees these rankings.
The third edition of the Prime Atlantic Senior and U-16 championships will commence at the Teslim Balogun Stadium from July 15 to July 20.
“Organizing a regular tournament is beneficial for the players, but making it a PSA-approved championship is the icing on the cake,” Falase commented.
“What this will do is improve the international rankings of our players; it will place them on an equal footing to leave their mark alongside their foreign counterparts.
“This third edition promises to be exciting. The players are in good form; I have seen some of them train. It will be a battle of the fittest,” Falase added.
Male and female players will compete in both senior and U-16 categories. Interested players are expected to register for the tournament online at nigeriasquashfed.com/event.
The Tournament Director, Wasiu Sanni, confirmed that equal prize money will be awarded to both men and women.
He also emphasized that the tournament aims to provide players with competitive opportunities.
“We believe that our female players put in as much effort as their male counterparts, so the prize money will be equal.
“Training without putting into practice what you have learned is futile, and as custodians of these players, we need to observe them and identify areas for improvement.
“I am looking forward to what lies ahead. Prime Atlantic has been a great partner in progress, and I hope these players make the most of this opportunity,” he concluded.
Onaopemipo Adegoke maintained dominance in the previous two editions, while Rofiat Abdulazeez and Busayo Olatunji have taken turns winning.
