Los Angeles Golf Club secured the top seed in the TGL playoffs by handing Bay Golf Club their first loss with a 5-3 victory on Monday. Trailing 3-1, LAGC capitalized on mistakes from their opponents, particularly when Min Woo Lee found the water on the par-5 10th hole against Tommy Fleetwood.
Sahith Theegala then strategically used the hammer rule to challenge Bay GC, which ultimately conceded two points, leveling the match.
Theegala continued his strong performance by chipping in for birdie at the 12th hole to take the lead over Wyndham Clark. Fleetwood followed with a chip-in on the next hole, maintaining LAGC's momentum.
Theegala sealed the victory at the 15th hole, once again getting the better of Clark to secure the final margin. His celebration, imitating Lee’s signature "Dr. Chipinski" gesture, added a playful element to the competition.
Reflecting on the loss, Bay GC's Shane Lowry admitted the defeat could serve as motivation for the playoffs.
Despite their strong start, Bay GC (4-1-0, 8 points) will need to refocus after their first setback. Lowry suggested that the loss might be a necessary wake-up call for the team as they prepare for the next stage of the tournament.
