LIV Golf: Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia resolve feud post-US Open
Posted : 28 June 2023
Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia have resolved their differences and put an end to their feud following the US Open.
McIlroy had voiced his opposition to the involvement of Garcia and other top golfers in LIV Golf, but their relationship improved during the recent tournament. Garcia expressed his wish for the reconciliation to have occurred earlier and highlighted the importance of regaining a lost friendship.
Both McIlroy and Garcia were teammates on Team Europe at the 2021 Ryder Cup, where the United States emerged victorious.
During the US Open, McIlroy had a friendly interaction with Garcia's wife, Angela Akins Garcia, which contributed to their rekindled friendship. Garcia had contemplated rebuilding their bond for some time and was motivated by the positive response from McIlroy.
The resolution of their feud was significant to Garcia, as he described the deterioration of their friendship as the saddest part of the situation. They engaged in a heartfelt conversation and expressed their desire to reconnect as friends. Garcia emphasized the importance of open communication and expressed gratitude for having McIlroy back in his life.
In the meantime, Sir Nick Faldo has cast doubts on the future of LIV Golf following its merger. Faldo questioned the sustainability of LIV Golf due to limited interest and potential difficulties in securing sponsorships.
He noted that the format of the event, which is strokeplay rather than team-based like the Ryder Cup, lacks the passion and atmosphere of the renowned team competition.
Faldo also expressed skepticism about the level of competitiveness and participation in LIV Golf, suggesting that only a few players are currently in the spotlight, while others are there primarily for financial reasons.
McIlroy and Garcia have reconciled their differences, reestablishing their friendship after a period of strain.
However, concerns remain regarding the future of LIV Golf following its merger, as its sustainability and level of interest among players and sponsors are questioned.
