LIV Golf's first event in the United States of 2025 saw a surge in viewership, with 484,000 people tuning in to watch Marc Leishman’s victory in Miami. This marked a significant increase for the league, but it still fell short of PGA Tour numbers, with the Valero Texas Open attracting 1.746 million viewers on NBC.
While LIV’s viewership was an improvement, it remained less than a third of the audience for the PGA Tour event, despite Leishman competing against high-profile golfers such as Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, and Jon Rahm.
The contrast in viewership between the two events highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by LIV Golf, especially as it competes against the established PGA Tour.
While LIV's Friday broadcast on FS1 outperformed the PGA's Golf Channel broadcast, the tide turned by Saturday, with the Valero drawing a significant audience on NBC.
Despite the PGA event not featuring an elite field, it still garnered more viewers, showcasing the deep-rooted fan loyalty and broader interest in the PGA Tour.
The viewership battle was also seen as a critical test for LIV Golf as it clashed with the PGA Tour on Fox Sports for the first time. This comes amid reports of financial maneuvering between the Saudi-backed league and the PGA Tour, with the latter rejecting a significant investment offer from LIV's backers.
Despite the drop in viewers from last year’s Valero, the PGA Tour is seeing overall positive ratings growth, with networks like NBC and CBS showing a 10 to 17 percent increase in viewership, suggesting a promising start to 2025.
