Posted : 08 July 2023
Cameron Smith took the lead after an impressive first round at the LIV Golf event held at Centurion Golf Club near London, carding a remarkable eight-under-par 63.
The Australian golfer recorded eight birdies, with a notable streak of three consecutive birdies on holes nine to 11. His strong performance positioned him one shot ahead of compatriot Marc Leishman, who unfortunately bogeyed the third hole.
This tournament marks the return of LIV Golf to the Hemel Hempstead venue, where the inaugural event took place in June of the previous year. Reflecting on his round, Smith expressed his satisfaction, stating, "It was just really good."
He acknowledged a slight decline in performance towards the end of the front nine but attributed it more to mental errors than poor swings. Despite this, he managed to leave himself in favorable positions and described his overall performance as "really solid."
Leishman had an excellent start to the day, setting the early pace with four consecutive birdies. He maintained a strong performance throughout the round and finished just behind Smith. Reflecting on his round, Leishman expressed contentment, stating, "Happy with the day."
He navigated a challenging stretch from hole one to seven with resilience, only recording one bogey and securing a couple of birdies. Overall, he was pleased with his seven-under score and considered it a positive start to the tournament.
In third place at three shots behind Smith is Belgium's Thomas Pieters. Tied for fourth place at four under par are American golfers Talor Gooch and Cameron Tringale, along with England's Laurie Canter.
