Lilia Vu withdraws, opening door for Celine Boutier's No. 1 aspiration

Posted : 08 March 2024

Top-ranked Lilia Vu's withdrawal from the Blue Bay LPGA in China before the second round on Friday due to injury has created an opportunity for Celine Boutier to potentially become the first golfer from France, male or female, to claim the world No. 1 ranking.

Boutier needs to finish solo third or better on Sunday at the Jian Lake Blue Bay course on Hainan Island to secure this historic achievement. The LPGA Tour confirmed Vu's withdrawal without providing specific details about her injury.

Ranked third globally, Boutier faces the challenge of making up ground after an opening one-over 73 left her eight shots off the lead going into the second round. The current overnight leader is Australia's Minjee Lee, who carded a seven-under 65 in the $2.2 million event, marking the conclusion of a three-tournament Asian swing.

Boutier, a 30-year-old who clinched her first major at the Evian Championship last season, finished second at the HSBC Women's World Championship in Singapore last week.

Vu, a 26-year-old American, has been contending with back issues and withdrew from the final round in Singapore just five days ago. Admitting her physical struggles, Vu explained on Tuesday that her body wasn't feeling great overall, particularly on Sunday.

Despite carding a level-par 72 in the Blue Bay's opening round, Vu decided to withdraw, providing Boutier with an opportunity to make a significant move in the rankings and potentially become the new world No. 1.
