Lexi Thompson's historic bid falls just short at PGA Tour debut

Lexi Thompson came agonizingly close to making the cut in her debut on the PGA Tour, despite a strong performance in the second round of the Shriners Children's Open.
The US Solheim Cup star had set her sights on becoming the first woman to make the cut at a PGA Tour event since 1945. Thompson, aged 28, showed great resilience by carding a two-under 69 in the second round after initially opening the tournament with a two-over 73.
She made five birdies during her impressive round, which briefly placed her on the cusp of matching a historic achievement set by Babe Didrikson Zaharias 78 years ago. However, two late bogeys in the final five holes ultimately led to her missing the cut in Las Vegas by three strokes.
Despite narrowly missing her goal, Thompson expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, saying, "It's an amazing feeling not only to have my parents out here to support me, but just to be able to come here and follow my dreams is something I have wanted to do since playing against my brothers growing up."
Thompson's presence as a sponsor's exemption garnered significant attention and attracted large galleries. Her performance, even though she didn't make the cut, has made her only the second female player, after Michelle Wie West, to shoot lower than 70 on the PGA Tour. Her experience also provided inspiration to young fans who came out to support her.
As Thompson's remarkable journey on the PGA Tour continues, American Lanto Griffin and Cameron Champ lead the tournament at 12 under, with Thompson's performance leaving a lasting mark in the golfing world.
