Lexi Thompson makes historic debut on PGA Tour at Shriners Children's Open
Posted : 13 October 2023
Lexi Thompson described her PGA Tour debut as a "huge honor," as she completed 16 holes at the Shriners Children's Open, finishing one over par. Thompson is only the seventh woman to compete in a PGA Tour event and the first since Brittany Lincicome in 2018.
Despite being two holes from completing her first round when play was halted due to darkness in Las Vegas, Thompson expressed her satisfaction with her performance, saying, "I played decent. I had one bad hole and a few iffy shots, but it's golf, and that was kind of expected."
Thompson, playing on a sponsor's exemption, is the center of attention at an event designed for players looking to secure a spot on the PGA Tour for the 2024 season. She currently shares 76th place on the leaderboard, aiming to become only the second woman to make the cut in a PGA Tour event.
The first woman to achieve this feat was Babe Didrikson Zaharias in the 1945 Phoenix Open. While other women have played in PGA events, including Michelle Wie West, Annika Sorenstam, and Suzy Whaley, none have made the cut.
Thompson acknowledged feeling some pressure at the beginning of her round, likening it to the nerves experienced during the Solheim Cup team matches. She made a birdie on the second hole but faltered with a bogey on the third. Thompson then encountered a three-putt double bogey on the seventh and missed the green for another bogey on the eighth. However, she rebounded with a birdie on the par-five ninth and sank another birdie putt on the 13th hole.
While Thompson missed a birdie opportunity at the 16th, her performance on the PGA Tour marks a historic moment for women's golf, and she hopes to continue making strides in the tournament as play resumes. In the overall standings, Beau Hossler leads the pack with a nine-under 62 on the par-71 course, holding a one-stroke advantage over Cameron Champ and J.T. Poston, both fellow Americans.
