As Lexi Thompson prepares for what might be her final Solheim Cup appearance this weekend, she is uncertain about her future as a player but is eager to stay involved with the event in some capacity. Ahead of her seventh Solheim Cup with Team USA, Thompson, 29, expressed a desire to remain connected to the tournament even if she retires from professional golf at the end of the year. She emphasized the significance of the event in her life, noting the lasting memories and friendships she has gained.
Since making her debut in the Solheim Cup in 2013 as an 18-year-old, Thompson has accumulated 12 1/2 points and contributed to two American victories. Last year, she posted a 3-1-0 record in Malaga, Spain, where the event ended in a 14-14 tie, allowing Team Europe to retain the cup. The Solheim Cup now occurs in even-numbered years to avoid conflicting with the Ryder Cup.
Thompson was chosen by captain Stacy Lewis for this year’s event, which starts on Friday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. The American team is aiming for their first Solheim Cup win since 2017. Despite the potential for this to be her final appearance, Thompson has remained upbeat and focused on enjoying the experience.
Reflecting on her time with the Solheim Cup, Thompson has not shown much emotion about her possible farewell. She has been enjoying her time with teammates, assistant captains, and the fans, savoring every moment of the event. With 11 LPGA victories since joining the tour in 2012, her most recent win was at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in June 2019.
