Lexi Thompson aims to inspire as she takes on historic PGA Tour challenge in Las Vegas

Posted : 11 October 2023
Lexi Thompson is determined to make her presence at this week's PGA Tour event in Las Vegas an inspiration to others. The 28-year-old golf champion will become the seventh woman in history to compete in a PGA Tour tournament when she tees off in the Shriners Children's Open on Thursday.

Thompson, a major champion, received a sponsor's invitation to participate in the event and views making the halfway cut as a significant achievement. The last woman to make a cut in a PGA Tour event was Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1945.

Ranked 25th in the world, Thompson is excited about this opportunity, saying, "It's been an honor just to get this invite, but one step, one shot at a time."

The most recent woman to play in a PGA Tour event was her compatriot Brittany Lincicome in the 2018 Barbasol Championship.

Lexi Thompson, who claimed her first major title at the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship (now Chevron Championship), has an impressive record with 11 LPGA Tour titles. Her golf journey began when she gained fame in 2007 by becoming the youngest player, at the age of 12, to qualify for the US Women's Open. She continued to qualify for the event in the following two years and even made the cut as a 14-year-old in 2009 before turning professional in 2010.

Thompson sees her participation as a chance to inspire others, particularly in a male-dominated sport. She aspires to show that anything is possible and that one can follow their dreams, regardless of gender. She emphasized the importance of self-belief and determination, which have been driving forces throughout her career.

During her opening round on Thursday, Thompson will be playing alongside Kevin Roy and Trevor Werbylo. She is aware that her invitation to compete has drawn some negative comments, but she remains focused on delivering a message of pursuing one's dreams with a positive mindset, regardless of any detractors.

Last year, the Shriners Children's Open title was claimed by South Korean Tom Kim.
