Anthony Sinisuka Ginting’s remarkable two-year unbeaten streak in Singapore came to an unexpected end today. Ginting, ranked No. 3 in the world, was defeated by an opponent significantly lower in the rankings. Malaysia's Leong Jun Hao, ranked 36th, delivered a stunning performance at the KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2024, overcoming Ginting with scores of 21-14, 10-21, 21-8. This marked Ginting's first loss in Singapore since Kento Momota defeated him in the 2019 final.
Leong Jun Hao entered the match unfazed by his previous 0-2 record against Ginting. His confident and proactive play paid off, leading to a significant victory. Leong expressed his satisfaction with his performance, noting his proactive approach was key. This victory propels him to a quarterfinal match against world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen, a challenge he is now prepared to face with increased positivity and initiative.
Reflecting on the match, Leong shared how his mindset had shifted since their previous encounters. He used to feel overpowered by Ginting, but this time, he focused on staying positive and preventing Ginting from dominating the match. His smooth gameplay and strategic initiatives allowed him to widen the lead and capitalize on opportunities, marking a significant breakthrough after two previous defeats.
Ginting acknowledged that Leong adapted to the conditions better than he did. He admitted to making numerous unforced errors and struggling with the challenging court conditions. Despite facing the same difficulties, Leong managed to prevail. Following his runner-up finish at the All England in March and subsequent losses against top 10 players, Ginting hopes to improve his performance ahead of the Olympics, using today's defeat as a learning experience for future events.
