The Betway Big Easy Tour kicked off its 2024/25 season with a thrilling opening round at Benoni Country Club, where Leon Vorster of Parys Golf and Country Club seized the lead with an impressive five-under 67. Sponsored by Betway for the first time, the tournament sparked excitement among players and fans alike at Benoni Country Club.
Vorster's performance was exemplary as he started his round with an eagle and two birdies within the first five holes, setting a strong pace early on. Despite a dropped shot on the 15th hole, he recovered with crucial birdies, including one on the closing hole, to finish with a one-stroke lead.
Reflecting on his round, Vorster highlighted his precision with the driver and proficiency with his wedges on the challenging course. He emphasized the importance of accuracy and strategy in navigating the course's tight fairways to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Meanwhile, seasoned campaigner Irvin Mazibuko from Soweto Country Club showcased his experience with a solid four-under 68, maintaining a bogey-free round to join Tyron Davidowitz and Gerhard Trytsman in a three-way tie for second place. Mazibuko emphasized the need for patience on the course, emphasizing the challenge of staying focused and capitalizing on scoring chances when they arose.
The leaderboard also featured strong performances from Eugene du Plessis, Brandon Gildenhuys, and Musiwalo Nethunzwi, all carding 69s to share fifth place, while a group including Tyrone Ryan and Thabang Simon followed closely behind on two-under-par, setting the stage for a competitive tournament ahead.
