In the first round of the 3M Open, Lee Hodges took the lead with an impressive 8-under 63, setting himself up for a chance to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs. Justin Thomas, a two-time major champion, started with a 69 in tougher afternoon conditions.
Kevin Streelman had the best round in the afternoon with a 64, tying with Hideki Matsuyama, Brandt Snedeker, and Tyler Duncan. Emiliano Grillo, Nick Hardy, and Justin Suh were one shot behind, while defending champion Tony Finau was part of a group that shot 66.
Hodges entered the tournament having missed the cut in several recent events, but his strong start puts him in contention to make the FedExCup Playoffs, where the top 70 players qualify. He began with back-to-back birdies, building momentum for the rest of the round.
Finau had a fantastic start with five birdies in the first four holes but faced challenges afterward. The afternoon players had to cope with both windy conditions and a heat index of 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
Hideki Matsuyama received some heat-related attention after his round, but it was not a serious concern. The heat proved challenging for players on the back nine, with temperatures rising significantly.
Brandt Snedeker, playing after sternum surgery that kept him out for nine months, had a solid performance with six birdies in eight holes around the turn. He mentioned the learning curve after his return and was pleased with his stress-free round.
Justin Thomas and Gary Woodland, both struggling major champions, were grouped together. Thomas is currently No. 75 in the FedExCup standings, while Woodland is at No. 90. Billy Horschel, ranked No. 119, shot a 66.
Sepp Straka, who recently tied for second place in The Open Championship, faced challenges and managed to rally for an even-par 71 in the first round.
