Australia's Lani Pallister, a strong contender in the women's 1,500 meters freestyle, has withdrawn from the event at the Paris Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19, the team announced on Tuesday. To preserve her energy, the team decided Pallister should focus on the 4x200m freestyle relay, which begins on Thursday.
The 1,500 meters freestyle heats were set to commence on Tuesday morning at La Defense Arena. Pallister, who won bronze in the 1,500m freestyle at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest and was part of Australia's world-title-winning 4x200m freestyle team in Fukuoka last year, is also scheduled to compete in the 800m freestyle in Paris starting on Friday.
This news follows Briton Adam Peaty testing positive for COVID-19 early on Monday, just hours after missing out on a third successive gold in the men's 100m breaststroke. Additionally, several Australian women's water polo players tested positive for COVID-19 in the days leading up to the opening ceremony, leading to their isolation from other team members.
The Paris Olympics are taking place without strict COVID-19 health protocols, in contrast to the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, where fans were restricted from attending events. The recent cases highlight ongoing challenges as athletes navigate the competition amidst the pandemic.
