The organizers of the annual Lagos Women Run announced on Thursday that the annual women's race is expected to attract 15,000 women for the 2023 edition.
The organizers also announced an upward revision of the top prizes for prospective winners of the women's race.
Ms. Tayo Popoola, the convener of the annual women's race and empowerment program, stated at the media briefing to herald the 8th edition that as the race expands, it will earn a label race.
The 8th edition of the race will be held on November 11, starting at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos Island.
The Lagos Women's race has evolved over the years, fulfilling its mandate of empowering women and providing them with a platform to thrive.
"We have been pursuing our mission of promoting women's welfare and empowering them in terms of health and well-being. The Lagos Women Run now offers a comprehensive welfare package for Lagos women.
We have increased the number of winners in each category from 10 to 20 winners; the open category will accommodate 20 winners, as will the veterans category.
The 8th edition of the Lagos Women Run is larger because there is an increase in the prize money. Last year, the winners received N1 million, while this year's overall winners will take home N1.5 million.
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been supportive of this run, and we have also enjoyed the support of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC)," she said.
Popoola added that the 8th Lagos Women Run will be unique as it includes numerous empowerment programs.
"We have added a series of empowerment programs to enhance the event because we want to improve their well-being, not just their running.
Many have their reasons for running; some do it for fun, some for the prize money, some for their health, and someone even told me they were running for their wife.
This year, the Lagos Women Run aims to have a more positive impact on the lives of our women through exhibitions, lectures, and vocational training.
All the programs lined up are designed to improve the living conditions of women.
Mrs. Tokunbo Bombata, Director, Office of the Chief of Staff, Lagos State government, stated that the annual women's run will continue to grow.
"We need more people to participate as never before because it's not just a run now, but a means to change the lives of our women.
It's a kind of empowerment program aimed at bringing women together and supporting them in small businesses and finance.
We aspire to make the event bigger every year with more women participating; we can reach up to 50,000 in attendance.
We already have over 8,000 women registered for this year's edition, and we plan to surpass last year's mark of just over 10,000, aiming for around 15,000 participants," she said.
Mrs. Bombata also emphasized that there will be more awareness for the race to encourage more women to join.
She stated that the organizers are working to secure more sponsors for the program in order to increase the top prizes.
