KWSC to host National Junior Squash Championship

Posted : 14 August 2024

The newly constructed eight glass-back Squash courts, a significant achievement by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq's administration, are set to host their first major event as the state prepares to welcome the 5th edition of the Ex Professionals Squash Players of Nigeria National Junior Championship. This prestigious event, scheduled to take place from August 15 to 17, will be a remarkable occasion that brings together young squash talents from across the country. The tournament will mark a new chapter in the development of squash in Kwara State, highlighting the state's commitment to nurturing sports and providing top-tier facilities for athletes.

The championship will feature competitions in three categories: U-11, U-13, and U-17, ensuring that young players at different stages of their development have the opportunity to showcase their skills. The inclusion of these age categories underscores the organizers' commitment to identifying and nurturing talent from a young age, providing these players with the experience and exposure needed to excel in the sport. The tournament is expected to attract a large number of participants, making it a vibrant and competitive event.

This championship is being organized by the Ex Professional Players of Nigeria in collaboration with the Kwara State Squash Association. The partnership between these two bodies is a testament to their shared vision of promoting squash in Nigeria and creating opportunities for young players to develop their potential. The Ex Professional Players Association has been instrumental in organizing this event, leveraging their experience and networks to ensure that the championship is a success.

The decision to hold the championship in Kwara State is a deliberate move to recognize and appreciate the efforts of Governor AbdulRazaq in promoting sports, particularly squash, in the state. His administration's investment in the construction of the new squash courts is seen as a significant contribution to the development of the game, not only in Kwara but across Nigeria. The championship will serve as a platform to showcase the state's new facilities and reinforce Kwara's position as a hub for squash in the country.

In addition to the support from the Kwara State government, the championship is also backed by prominent figures in Nigerian sports, including Nottingham Forest and Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi. Awoniyi's involvement in the event highlights the growing interest in squash among football stars and other athletes, who recognize the importance of supporting the development of various sports disciplines. His contribution, along with that of veteran players, adds prestige to the championship and serves as an inspiration for the young participants.

The sponsorship and support for this championship reflect a broader commitment to the growth of squash in Nigeria. The collaboration between government, professional players, and sports enthusiasts is vital in ensuring that young talents have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. The event is expected to not only provide a competitive platform for junior players but also to foster a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie among the participants.

As the championship draws near, anticipation is building for what promises to be a landmark event in Nigerian squash. The newly built courts, the talented young players, and the strong support from both the government and prominent sports figures all contribute to the excitement surrounding the tournament. This event is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of the progress being made in squash and a glimpse into the future of the sport in Nigeria.
