Kuchar Leads After Weather-Interrupted Round at Wyndham Championship

Posted : 11 August 2024

Matt Kuchar delivered another stellar performance by shooting his second consecutive 6-under-par 64, placing him at the top of the leaderboard after the weather-interrupted second round of the Wyndham Championship on Saturday.

Kuchar will enter the final day at Sedgefield Country Club with a one-stroke lead, as darkness forced the suspension of play with several golfers still on the course. The tournament, which marks the last event of the PGA Tour's regular season, will require players who made the cut to play at least 36 holes on Sunday to complete the 72-hole competition.

Max Greyserman impressed with a score of 60, tying him for second place alongside Chad Ramey, who shot a 64, and Cameron Young, who posted a 62, all sitting at 11-under.

Kuchar, who hasn't won a tournament in five years, faces a critical challenge as he needs to secure a victory at the Wyndham Championship to keep his streak alive of qualifying for the FedExCup playoffs, a feat he has achieved every year since the format's inception in 2007. Other notable players in the mix include Beau Hossler, Billy Horschel, and England's Aaron Rai, all of whom are at 10-under.

The tournament has been plagued by weather delays, with the first round postponed from Thursday and further interruptions on Friday and Saturday due to rain. Despite these challenges, Greyserman managed to make history by carding the second 60 of the tournament after Hossler's first-round achievement.

Greyserman, a 29-year-old who played college golf at Duke, started his round with five consecutive birdies and added more to set himself up for a possible sub-60 score, finishing with a birdie on the 17th hole.

Among the other highlights, defending champion Lucas Glover recorded a hole-in-one on the 12th hole but struggled to a 71 and is expected to miss the cut with a 1-over for the tournament. Tour rookie Joe Highsmith also made headlines by acing the same hole, marking his third hole-in-one of the season, a feat not achieved since 1983.

Meanwhile, C.T. Pan of Taiwan withdrew during the second round, adding to the drama of a challenging and unpredictable tournament.
