Top-ranked Nelly Korda and U.S. teammate Allisen Corpuz will face Europe's Charley Hull and Esther Henseleit in the opening foursomes of the 19th Solheim Cup on Friday morning. Korda, who has claimed six LPGA titles this season, and Corpuz, who were successful together in last year's competition, will lead the American team. Henseleit, a Paris Olympic runner-up, will make her debut for Europe alongside Hull, who brings eight Solheim Cup appearances.
U.S. captain Stacy Lewis expressed confidence in her choice, citing the successful pairing of Korda and Corpuz and their familiarity with each other. "They’re very comfortable together, so I have a lot of confidence in them," Lewis said. Meanwhile, Europe’s captain, Suzann Pettersen, opted to pair rookie Henseleit with the experienced Hull to ignite the team. Pettersen emphasized the importance of giving rookies early experience, aiming to avoid the anxiety of waiting.
In addition to the opening match, other foursomes include France’s Celine Boutier and Swiss rookie Albane Valenzuela against Americans Rose Zhang and Lauren Coughlin, Dane Emily Pedersen and Swede Maja Stark against Ally Ewing and Jennifer Kupcho, and Swede Linn Grant with Spain’s Carlota Ciganda facing second-ranked Lilia Vu and rookie Sarah Schmelzel. The Americans currently lead the series 10-7 with one draw, but Europe has won the trophy three times consecutively, including last year's draw in Spain.
Pettersen used a mix of statistics and intuition to select her pairings, acknowledging the challenge of balancing data with player input. A notable decision was to bench Ireland’s Leona Maguire, despite her strong Solheim Cup record. Lewis also made strategic choices, including pairing Zhang and Coughlin based on statistical recommendations. She aimed to deploy rookies early to manage their energy and anticipation, highlighting the complexities of team composition and strategy.
