Ko Jin-young Takes Lead at LPGA FM Championship

Posted : 01 September 2024

South Korea's Ko Jin-young took a commanding lead at the LPGA Tour's FM Championship with a 5-under 67 during the third round at TPC Boston on Saturday. Ko's performance placed her two strokes ahead of the field, showcasing her strong play as she made four birdies before the turn and closed with birdies on the final two holes, despite a bogey at the par-4 15th. The 29-year-old, a two-time major champion and former LPGA Player of the Year, is seeking her first win of 2024, with her last victory at the Cognizant Founders Cup in May of the previous year.

Ko's lead became more prominent after her compatriot Ryu Hae-ran, who had surged to a six-stroke advantage with a remarkable 10-under 62 on Friday, struggled with a six-over 78. Ryu’s poor round dropped her four shots behind Ko, significantly altering the tournament’s dynamics.

American Lauren Coughlin, who carded a 3-under 69 and was the only player to shoot in the 60s across all three rounds, remains within striking distance, trailing by just two shots. Coughlin, who has recently secured two tour victories this year, including one at the Scottish Open, expressed a focus on managing her energy and concentrating on her game despite feeling fatigued.

Several players are still in contention, with Spain's Carlota Ciganda, American Allisen Corpuz, and Thailand's Atthaya Thitikul all three shots behind the leader. As the final round approaches, the competition remains intense with Ko looking to convert her lead into a win.
