Kevin Yu achieved a significant milestone in his career by securing his first PGA Tour victory during a thrilling playoff at the Sanderson Farms Championship held in Mississippi on Sunday. The 26-year-old from Taipei delivered a remarkable performance, including a crucial birdie on the par-four 18th hole, which propelled him into a tie for the lead with Beau Hossler. Yu ultimately triumphed over Hossler on the first playoff hole at the Country Club of Jackson.
Yu’s final round showcased his resilience and skill, as he fired an impressive five-under-par 67, bringing his total score to 23 under and placing him alongside Hossler at the top of the leaderboard. The victory not only marked a personal achievement for Yu but also fulfilled a long-held dream he had cherished since childhood. "It's literally a dream come true," he expressed joyfully after clinching the title. "I think this is the dream for all golfers—to win on the PGA Tour."
Gratitude played a significant role in Yu's post-victory reflections, as he credited his parents for their unwavering support throughout his journey as a professional golfer. "My dad taught me how to play golf since I was five, and they've been working really hard, sacrificing a lot...without them, I can't have done this today," he remarked, highlighting the importance of family in his success.
Entering the final round, Yu was two strokes behind Keith Mitchell, who had a challenging day on the course with a two-under-par 70. Hossler initially took the lead with a solid four-under-par 68, moving ahead of the field after a birdie on the 17th hole. However, Yu's determination shone through as he made a pivotal birdie on the 18th, sinking a 15-foot putt to force a playoff. He carried that momentum into the playoff, setting up a five-foot birdie opportunity that ultimately secured his historic victory.
