Ken Tanigawa secured an impressive victory at the Rogers Charity Classic in Calgary, closing with a 6-under 64 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 17-under 193. His win was the result of a remarkable two-day surge, beginning with a stunning 9-under 61 on Saturday that included a hole-in-one at the par-3 16th, propelling him 36 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for fourth place. On Sunday, Tanigawa maintained his momentum, carding eight birdies against two bogeys to claim the title by two strokes ahead of Australian Richard Green.
Tanigawa credited his strong performance to a home-cooked meal prepared by family friends with whom he was staying. The meal, enjoyed on Friday night, seemed to set the tone for his exceptional second round, after which he continued to excel on the course. Reflecting on his win, the 56-year-old remarked, "Boy, I just holed putts. You start making putts and then you start feeling it, and they just started going in." His steady putting proved crucial in overcoming his five-stroke deficit from Friday's first round.
Richard Green, who led the tournament after the second round, struggled to maintain his lead during the final stretch. Despite a promising start on Sunday, where he was 4 under through 13 holes, Green faltered with bogeys on the 14th and 17th holes, ultimately finishing two shots behind Tanigawa. Green expressed disappointment with his finish, noting, "It's just a shame that things just at the end there didn't really fall my way."
Darren Clarke of England and Jason Caron tied for third place at 14-under 196, with Clarke delivering a bogey-free round and Caron making just one mistake with a bogey on the 16th hole. Mario Tiziani finished fifth at 13 under, while New Zealand's Steven Alker took sixth place at 12 under. Other notable finishes included Matt Gogel, Shane Bertsch, and Ireland's Padraig Harrington, who all tied for seventh, six shots off the lead.
