Kaymer, Meronk, Surratt Share Lead at LIV Golf Houston Opener

Posted : 08 June 2024

Martin Kaymer of Germany, Adrian Meronk of Poland, and Caleb Surratt share the lead after the first round of LIV Golf Houston, all carding bogey-free, 7-under 65s at the Golf Club of Houston. Kaymer and Meronk's strong performances gave their team, Cleeks GC, a comfortable three-shot lead over Torque GC, combining with Finland's Kalle Samooja's 3-under 69.

The co-leaders hold a one-shot edge over Kevin Na and Mexico's Carlos Ortiz, both at 6-under 66, while a group including Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, and Joaquin Niemann are tied at 5-under 67. Kaymer, a two-time major winner, sees his form heating up ahead of the US Open next week at Pinehurst No. 2, where he previously triumphed in 2014.

Expressing his confidence, Kaymer stated, "Little things need to fall into place, then rounds like this can happen. I'm glad that I shot such a good round today. It gives me confidence going into tomorrow and into Sunday, and also moving forward, as you mentioned, the US Open." Meanwhile, Surratt, at just 20 years old, left college earlier this year to turn professional, signing with Jon Rahm's Legion XIII team, and his prior course knowledge contributed to his success.

Surratt, who left college earlier this year to turn professional and signed with Jon Rahm's Legion XIII team, noted his familiarity with the course, saying, "Fifteen months ago I was playing at Tennessee, and we had a University of Houston golf tournament here. It was definitely in a little different condition and a lot more fans and a little harder setup, but I've seen the golf course and I feel comfortable." Notable players like Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and Phil Mickelson also made their presence felt in the tournament.
