Poland's Katarzyna Niewiadoma captured the Tour de France Femmes title in a gripping finale, enduring severe pain throughout the race. On Sunday, Niewiadoma managed to fend off defending champion Demi Vollering in an exhilarating last stage. Despite Vollering crossing the finish line first, Niewiadoma bravely held onto the yellow jersey to secure her victory.
Vollering, starting the final day in eighth place and over a minute behind, posed a significant threat. As she surged ahead on the penultimate climb, Niewiadoma feared her chance was lost. "There was a point on the climb, especially at the top of Col du Glandon, where I thought I'd lost everything," Niewiadoma confessed, revealing her struggles both physically and mentally.
Despite a brief resurgence on the descent, Niewiadoma's energy dwindled towards the end, with the last three kilometers being the most painful of her career. "I was just trying to stay on the bike and push through the agony," she recounted. Vollering won the stage, but Niewiadoma’s fourth-place finish was enough to secure the overall win by a mere four seconds.
Reflecting on her victory, Niewiadoma expressed mixed emotions, noting the intense pain she endured and her desire to simply rest after crossing the line. She also highlighted the disparity in financial rewards between men and women in cycling, hoping for future equality. Her dramatic win, combined with her ongoing commitment to advancing women's sports, ensures that her name will be forever associated with the Tour de France Femmes.
