Jutanugarn Eliminates Korda with 1-Up Win to Secure Spot in Semifinals

Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand triumphed over World No. 1 Nelly Korda 1 up to secure the top spot in Group 1 and eliminate Korda from the T-Mobile Match Play in North Las Vegas on Friday. Jutanugarn finished the round-robin with a perfect 3-0-0 record, while Korda, who had 1 1/2 points from the first two days, was forced to play catch-up.

 

Despite challenging conditions with strong winds, Jutanugarn remained patient and focused, saying she enjoyed the match against one of the game's best players.

 

The match was closely contested throughout, with Jutanugarn leading most of the front nine before Korda tied it up with a birdie on the ninth hole. Korda briefly gained the advantage with a win on the 13th, but a bogey on the 15th allowed Jutanugarn to level the score again.

 

 Jutanugarn's birdie at the par-5 16th hole ultimately gave her the lead, which she maintained to the finish. Korda, the defending champion, was unable to reclaim the lead, and Jutanugarn moved on to the next stage.

 

In addition to Jutanugarn, several other players finished the round-robin with perfect records, including Jeeno Thitikul, Sei Young Kim, Brooke M. Henderson, and Maja Stark. A number of other groups also had exciting finishes, with playoffs held to break ties for first place.

 

Notable results included Carlota Ciganda's victory over Lydia Ko and Ashleigh Buhai's win over Alexa Pano. The competition now heads into the single-elimination bracket, with the quarterfinals set to take place on Saturday, followed by the semifinals and final on Sunday.
